Dictionaries for 3rd Graders

Rotarians from our club drive out to Buies Creek and Lillington-Shawtown elementary schools each Fall to distribute dictionaries to each third-grade child. The children are always very excited to receive their very own dictionaries and when asked, they each look up a new word, provided by their teacher, and they tell us their own idea of what a dictionary was used for.

Reading is the most important skill of all. It is the starting point for all the economic and social opportunities this world has to offer. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.

Every year our club hands out dictionaries to all the third grade students in both of these two schools, and we leave extras with the school office to be used for any new students that come in later in the year.
