The Costs of Malware

HCS Tech

The costs of malware on a business can be mild to staggering, and that’s what Lewis Pope and Jim Hauer spoke to our club about this week.

Club member Leon McKoy’s program this week had Jim, owner of HCS Tech, Harnett County’s own top-notch computer service business, and Lewis, who works at HCS Tech specializing in computer system security talking to us about malware and how to watch out for it, as well as protect against it.

Lewis spoke to us about the dangers of viruses and malware, concentrating his remarks to the different types of malware and how it can effect a business, or individual. He talked about how malware can be introduced to a computer by opening an attachment in an email, or by doing so on a website that may seem trustworthy, but on closer inspection, is not.

He also spoke about ransomware and how difficult it is to recover from this sort of scheme, and password theft and its financial implications.

HCS Tech has offerings to help businesses avoid and recover from such devastating events – the investment could well be worth the investment.

Buddy Backpack of Harnett County

Bob Doberstein of Buddy Backpacks of Harnett County with Club President Karen Kratz

Our speaker this week was Bob Doberstein of Harnett County’s Buddy Backpack program which is dedicated to providing nutritious supplements to children for the growing of healthy, strong, minds and bodies.

Bob told us that Buddy Backpack serves over 1,200 children in Harnett County, and about the expenses involved. He also told us how Sam’s Club and grocers help out by providing some minor discounts on food purchased and the logistics of ordering, picking up and delivering the food to the Buddy Backpack storage facility.

Bob and his wife, Carrie, started Buddy Backpack about ten years ago. Together with the generous help of volunteers putting the meals together and delivering them to the schools each week, no child goes hungry over the weekends.

This week we inducted Meron Andemichael, DDS into our club. Dr. Andemichael, a friend and college of member Catherine Evans, heard so many good things from her about our club that he decided he would like to join the family of Rotary.

We are excited to have him with us, and hope he grows to love Rotary as much as we do.
