Public TV – Some of the Best Programming in NC
Our speaker this week was Tom Howe, Director and General Manager of UNC-TV. Tom oversees 12 stations in North Carolina, and manages a budget of more then $26 million with a staff of more than 170 employees.
Tom told us about the viewership of public television, how it has declined over the years with the growth of cable television, and how the state’s budget struggles have impacted UNC-TV’s own budget. He also spoke about statistics on who watches public television and those numbers.
It was interesting to hear about the various local programs UNC-TV produces, and those that are a part of the family of PBS programs. Tom also told us about the upcoming production, “Freedom Riders“, about a group of African-American men and women who worked hard to break the color barriers in the 1960′s (scheduled to air on May 16, 2011 at 9:00pm).
UNC-TV always needs new members and supporters. If you feel you can be one of these North Carolinians, visit UNC-TV’s pledge page.
