Rotarians from our club drove out to Buies Creek and Lillington-Shawtown elementary schools in October and were escorted by the school Principal to each third-grade class where we districbuted dictionaries to each child. The children were very excited to receive their very own dictionary and when asked, they each had their own idea of what a dictionary was used for. After receiving the dictionaries the children were asked by their teacher to look up a word or two and read their meaning.

Reading is the most important skill of all. It is the starting point for all the economic and social opportunities this world has to offer. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.

Every year our club hands out dictionaries to all the third grade students in both of these schools, and we leave extras with the school office to be used for any new students that come in later in the year.
