We were honored with a visit from the Scout Master, Herb Owery, and Asst. Scout Master, Nelson Pagan, of Boy Scout Troop 61, for which our Club is the sponsor.

Herb talked to us about the history of the club; established in 1919 and the 2nd oldest troop in the Occoneechee Council. They have 12 Scouts and 5 adults. They are working on the history of their Eagle Scout list , which has an impressive array of names to it.

Herb also told us how active the Scouts are with; the Winter Klondike Camp in which 100-150 scouts attend and perform a 1 mile sled race; the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico where they spend 10 days and hike 70 miles; and about the 50 mile canoe trip they recently took down the Cape Fear River over two days time.

The scouts also place flags on veteran’s graves every Memorial Day.

The men said they are proudest when they present a new Eagle Scout to the community.

President Peter Strickland presented a check for $350 to the Scout Masters as part of our annual support.

Of the things we think, say or do
